to. mitt romney reacted to the jobs report in wisconsin today. >> he said he was going to cut the federal deficit in half and then he doubled it. he said he was going to lower the unemployment rate down to 5.2% right now. today we learn that it's 7.9% and that's 9 million jobs short of what he promised. >> joe biden responded to romney this way today. >> called it territorial tax. it's the bain way. it means if you're going to build a factory you go find -- this is the fact. you go find a currentory with the lowest tax rate and the cheapest wages. build it there, pay those taxes and you never have to pay a penny in tax in the profit you make when you bring them back home. why would anybody build -- why would anybody build a factory here? ladies and gentlemen, the experts point out, that new territorial tax will create 800,000 jobs. all of them abroad. i'm not making up, all of them abroad. 800,000. i found it fascinating at their convention when governor romney said the first thing i will do when i'm elected president, i will take a jobs tour. it's going to have to be a foreig
romney is a job creator. that is what he did all his life. then he became a governor and he inherited a state with the deficits were high, people were out of work. when he left, what was the story? he balanced the budget, ran a surplus, and the people back to work. and then i think you saw with one of these videos about the olympics. that is leadership. you go out there, the thing is a mess and you turn it around because you are a leader. that is why it is so important we elect romney, because it is these kids' future that is at stake. it is the strength of the family that is at stake. now, i have to tell you, i have been referring to paul ryan as the paul revere of the next generation, ok? i've known paul ryan for a long time. unfortunately, he is a lot younger than i am. in fact, when i was budget committee chairman, he worked on the staff of the budget committee. but he stood out like no one else on nasdaq. then he was elected to congress. our careers are very similar because he has taken on these issues, these a dent issues and economic issues and the job issues for our country. i
month of job growth, while mitt romney cited an up-tick in the unemployment rate as proof of an economic standstill. good evening. i'm judy woodruff. >> brown: and i'm jeffrey brown. on the newshour tonight, with the final data before election day now out, we look at the overall jobs picture in america, and how the candidates are and are not addressing it. >> woodruff: then, long gas lines, continuing power outages, and massive cleanup efforts in the northeast. ray suarez updates the slow climb back after the storm. >> brown: ordinary citizens, some of them school children, caught in the crossfire in syria's war. margaret warner has our report. >> as syrian rebels expand the areas they control, the assad regime has turned to long-range artillery and air attacks to hit the opposition and civilians as well. >> woodruff: we have a "battleground" dispatch from iowa, where immigration is rarely mentioned by the candidates, but is on the minds of voters. >> although latinos make up only 5% of iowa's population, their numbers have increased by 110% over the last ten years. >> brown: plus mark s

romney is apparently a vote for 12 million jobs. >> we're going to create 12 million new jobs. i have a plan that will create 12 million new jobs. we're going to create 12 million new jobs in just 4 years. >> of course, those 12 million jobs come with 12 million magic wands attached. joining us now is robert reich, professor of economics at the university of california-berkeley and the former labor secretary and the author of "beyond outrage." welcome, sir. professor, romney is not creating 12 million new jobs, he's taking credit for 12 million jobs that one research firm believes will be automatically created over the next four years. is that not the truth? >> martin, you know, i'm surprised that mitt romney didn't say 14 million or 18 million or -- >> true actually. >> he picked the number completely out of a hat. the united states economy in a normal year will create, and this is not a normal year right now, about ybut in a normal yea create about 2 million new jobs. given that we are in a recovery and the recovery is picking up some speed, it's possible that we may get up to 2.5 o
to bring in one of the authors of romney's 12 million jobs claim, john taylor, professor at stanford university, senior fellow at the hoover institution and an adviser to mitt romney's campaign. now, john, i know you and i talked about this before. i am all for aspirational goals. so is america by the way. they really want big goals. this is not being presented as a wish, goal or aspiration. it has been presented as an achievable promise. i just don't feel that that's entirely honest. >> well, there's a number of ways to look at it and get the same number. first of all, look at the history you were referring to. 1980s, we came out of an even deeper recession than we have now where unemployment got way over 10% and the numbers are much like what's being predicted. second is the plan that governor romney is being put forward. don't raise taxes, get away from the short tn term actions, which i think has held the economy back because of uncertainty. there's a lot of cash out there that firms are sitting on, waiting for the opportunity. there's a number of ways you can look at this and th
chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. mitt romney will fight for every american job. >> they're not backing down, of course. they're also running misleading radio ads on the same topic. michael steele ised former chairman of the rnc and ron reagan is a radio talk show hosts. both of my guests are msnbc political analysts. i want to start with ron. this stuff, weeks ago the romney campaign said we're not going to let this campaign be run by fact checkers. i mean, i have never heard it said -- you just say we don't care if you find out we're lying. lying is a bad word. we don't care if you catch us. we're going to keep doing it. because we're desperate. >> yeah, well, they may be desperate. ohio is going to be the clincher for this election. everybody has been saying it and it's probably true. mitt romney probably hopes that the truth isn't going to find him in ohio at some point here. he's been a shape shifter his entire political career. this shouldn't surprise us, and yet somehow he's taken it to a new level. the romney campaign attaches itself to untruth like a sex
do we need to do? well, we've got mitt romney who was a job creator. the most important moral issue is job creation. when people work, moms and dads are happier, their marriages are better and their children do better. when mom and dad are out of work, is the children that suffer. mom and dad are not as strong as when things are going better. that is the moral issue. and mitt romney is a job creator. that is what he did all his life. then he became a governor and he inherited a state with the deficits were high, people were out of work. when he left, what was the story? he balanced the budget, ran a surplus, and the people back to work. and then i think you saw with one of these videos about the olympics. that is leadership. you go out there, the thing is a mess and you turn it around because you are a leader. that is why it is so important we elect romney, because it is these kids' future that is at stake. it is the strength of the family that is at stake. now, i have to tell you, i have been referring to paul ryan as the paul revere of the next generation, ok? i've known paul ryan
romney is the man for the job and the des moines register is endorsing governor romney. >> huge in iowa, potentially. obviously completely stuck in the polls, the president seems to have had more people coming out in early voting but the statewide polling in iowa shows romney gaining. six electoral votes, it could come down to a margin of victory in the single digits. this one matters. it's also the case that the des moines register has gotten this endorsement correct in five of the -- all five of the last races. they endorsed al gore in 2000 and he got most of the popular vote. 80s pretty good bellwether. >> we're going to take a look at that in the next hour. the popular vote verses electoral vote. >> who in the office would be able to stimulate businesses, have a plan that gets small businesses back on their feet and therefore you have hiring. do you see that as the most important issue in our country right now? >> it's not up to me to say. i'm just one voter but that's what voters are saying. it's also why several other papers in addition to the des moines register, endorsed barack
not have jobs if we went in mitt romney's direction. s what's he going to do before the election? he's going to have highly deceptive ads running in ohio like this one about chrysler. >> announcer: barack obama said he saved the auto industry but for who? ohio or china? under president obama g.m. cut 15,000 americans jobs. but they're planning to double the number of cars built in china which means 15,000 more jobs for china and now comes word that chrysler plans to start making jeeps in china. >> cenk: wait a minute! president obama saved all of those jobs in ohio and michigan and all across the country! they're turning the truth on its held. oh, jeep is not making -- they're make the jeeps in china. don't take my word for it. go to jeep. they said... let's set the record state. jeep has no intention of shifting production of its jeep models out of north america to china. in other words romney is lying! now, they also started running an ad they used to run earlier against obama which is not true. they didn't an
more on what president obama and mitt romney have planned for today. plus how the new jobs report released this morning could impact the race. >>> the coffee executive who campaigned against partisan gridlock in washington is making an endorsement. the starbucks ceo announced he will vote for president obama this coming tuesday. last year the ceo urged his fellow business leaders to withhold campaign contributions to both parties until congress and the white house reach a deal to bring down the nation's deficit. he says the president deserves a second time. >>> affects of superstorm sandy continue. new video from new york city this morning, shows the continuing long line of cars waiting to fuel up. gas shortages continue to be found across the east coast, 60% of gas stations in new jersey are closed because they've run out of gas. 70% of stations are closed on long island. the shortage of fuel lead to one violence incident in queens. authorities arrested a motorist yesterday after he pointed a pistol at another motorist who complained when he tried to cut in line while waiting for
mitt romney would be good at creating jobs while he was 48 in job creation massachusetts? i will take the second question first. mitt romney has created jobs. he is in the middle of a tough economy and created almost 50,000 new jobs in massachusetts. also remember he is one of the most extraordinary business leaders we've seen in our time and instrumental in creating american enterprises such as peoples and bright horizons and another a -- number of other companies. i think mitt romney has a very clear record of job creation that stands in stark contrast from the president was talked about getting unemployment down below 8% and it dips below just this past month, but for the 43 previous months those over -- it was over 8%. the policies just have not worked. with regard to libya, your comment on that, i would say obviously mayor ronnie was our president at the time. we're in a campaign against president obama. it was president obama and his administration has been nearly two weeks blaming what happened on a video, threatening to arrest the filmmaker. there will be discussions on that f
of doing the right now. >> you think governor romney could have done a better job in how he presented that ad? it has gotten a lot of a pushcart. vice-president biden called it "flagrantly dishonest." he said, >guest: i am not going to get into individual ads on television. in ohio, you have been bombarded with ads from both sides of the aisles. it is something the average voter will talk to you about on the street, the negativity of many of the eds, and the accuracy of many of the eds. i am not going to comment on it. i think the washington post made some comment on this ad, and said it was not "pants on fire." there was accuracy in the advertisement. i think i am going to leave it at that. host: on the republican line, theresa is waiting. caller: good morning, and thank you. i am pleased to have the opportunity to speak some of the things i would like to say. i hope that with the ground game with the republicans and in ohio that the people who are telling the people there to do their own research before they pull the lever. let them talk to people who go to doctors and things of tha
, it is simple why governor romney is doing so were better in ohio. people are focused on the economy and jobs and mitt romney has a land that is pro growth and pro jobs and president obama doesn't. when you look at the last four years they are disappointed. we are living through the weakest economic recovery since the great depression, there are 22 million americans struggling to find works and 3.5 million more women in poverty. take home pay has gone down $4,300 per family. president obama has the glossy brochure and i have looked at that brochure and i layed this role of obama during the debate preparation and it is more of the same. you can argue we need to do more of the same but it hasn't worked and it hasn't worked by president obama's own measurement, saying unemployment would be 15 percent lower if we passed the stimulus package. he said economic growth today would be two-thirds higher than it is. so, it hasn't worked. the one thing he does have in his new proposal is to raise taxes. yes, he wants to raise taxes on a million small businesses including a lot in ohio, and that will resu
ad team obama fired back at governor romney's claim that jeep is outsourcing jobs to china, but the campaign is using some of its strongest language yet. >> even the conservative detroit news criticized romney for his wrong-headedness on the bailout. after romney's false claim of jeep outsourcing to china, chrysler itself has refuted romney's lie. mitt romney and ohio jobs, wrong then. >> let detroit go interrupt. >> dishonest now. >> mark murray joins me. mark, we have governor strik land, former governor of ohio on yesterday. he called the romney ads desperate and many other surrogates for the president have said the same thing. they're firing back in an ad specifically. what is behind this -- i don't know this attempt by governor romney's campaign to put this out after the detroit news and others said that his claim is misleading. it's wrong. it's untrue. i don't know how many other descriptions you can lay out there. >> tamron, i wouldn't use the word desperation. the ad that the romney campaign first put out on this jeep situation isn't coming from a position of streng
job there. give us that perspective rocky. >> i did cut an ad with mitt romney because my dealings with him through the olympics he was a good, moderate, reasonable person very detail-oriented and he was really great for me to work with on the olympics. but you know, he shared a lot of his positions with me as he did with the massachusetts voters who is pro-choice, pro-gay and lesbian rights. i thought wow as a republican he could bring that party that was really becoming right wing, nutty, extreme back to the middle. but look what he has done. he has taken it further to the right than i think it ever has been before. i hate to say this about an old friend, but he has become a real flim-flam man in this campaign. >> cenk: shocking. now look, what we're talking about here is a perfect example rocky. is there something wrong with taking federal money to to run an olympics? i don't think so. we won the bid for the owe limp picks. but now he's saying federal money, that's not acceptable. except when it was his advantage he loved it. >> that's exactly right. $1.3 billion went towards tr
should anybody believe that governor romney would be good at creating jobs what he was 48 in job guest: well, i'll take the question first. governor romney in the middle oh f a tough economy created almost 50,000 new jobs in massachusetts. let's remember. >> on "washington journal" tomorrow morning we'll look at virge. >> now we'll go to jacksonville florida where mitt romney is to speak shortly. he is with jeb bush. >> you ready to take back the white house? i thought you might be. how did you enjoy five for fighting? he's a really good guy. did you enjoy his song "freedom never cries"? this is an important election. this an election about what the future of america is going to be. is our future going to be more debt and more regulation and more taxes? sor our future going to be in less taxes, less regulations and. nibble mitt romney. he's the right candidate at the right time to be the president of the united states. [applause] you know in the state of florida we have 820,000 people out of work, people who will looking for work, people who have given up looking for work. we need some
and because president obama did such a good job on the auto bailout. the first thing that romney says is well, wait, obama just did what i suggested and let them go into bankruptcy. lie. that's the first lie. no, no no, no. there is a big difference. obama gave them $80 billion in federal help. to go into and come out of bankruptcy. everybody has said economists have said steve ratner who was in charge of the auto bailout has said over and over again if romney's plan had gone through federal government did nothing and they were just left up to the private sector, no bank was going to lend them any money. they were in such bad shape. they would have gone under and never gone out and they would have been gone. america's auto industry would be gone. instead, it's back. a million and a half jobs they figure still for g.m. and chrysler as a result of the auto bailout. jobs brought back. and new jobs. so the first lie didn't work. now romney's out with a second lie which is that having come back, g.m. and chrysler are now
. mitt romney is promising if elected he'll create 12 million jobs. but at the same time, romney underscoring government isn't the one that creates jobs. how does either one deliver on the promise of creating millions of jobs? >> well, you know, the first thing to note is when an economy is growing, even at a moderate pace, it's going to generate a lot of jobs. i think if you look at the last two, two and a half years in the u.s. economy, we have added more than 5 million jobs in the private sector. so it's been growing at around 2 million a year. under the romney call, what he's calling for to get 12 million, that would have to go up to 3 million a year from 2 million. a lot of people think that regardless of what happens in washington, you would probably see something along the lines of those, of those kind of rates because the economy will move its way back to the trend growth of 3%, 3.5%. i think one, you have to hope that the macroeconomy goes with you. two, i think the policy can make a difference on the margin. and there's a difference of opinion between the two camps, rom
learned that it's actually 7.9%, and that's nine million jobs short of what he promised. >> mr. romney's campaign is snapping at the heels of the incumbent president. his campaign organizers say they can and will win, but they can win only if they take the vital swing states of florida, virginia and ohio. anything less than the prospects receive for them. >> this race is very, very close. it may confound pollsters and pundits alike. it's not clear how or if hurricane sandy will affect the results, but i think we can venture this far -- president obama appears to be holding on to a very narrow lead. adam brooks, bbc news, washington. >> bold predictions in a tight race. as adam just reported, no state is more hotly contested than ohio. laura is in cleveland for us tonight at a cleveland market for us tonight, laura. i imagine you've been chatting to shoppers today. what have they been telling you about the state of this race? >> well, it's very interesting. the one thing that you hear above anything else is that people are totally and utterly fed up with the political ads on television.
we think no one is looking. mitt romney: believe that they are victims. anncr: mitt romney thought no one was looking when... he attacked forty-seven percent of americans. his companies shipped jobs overseas. his plan cuts millionaires' taxes, but raises yours. he'll voucherize medicare... and make catastrophic cuts to education. so remember what romney said... and what his plan would do. president obama: i'm barack obama and... i approve this message. >> there is a proposal before the city council that would find some businesses for leaving their doors open while running the air-conditioning. the goal is to encourage conservation. office buildings and retail stores could be fined $100 for the first offense and up to $800 for repeat offenses. restaurants, hotels, and small businesses would be exempt. >> you do have to open the door to walk in. a basic requirement. >> that is exempt. >> it will be awhile before we need to worry about air- conditioning around here. it is chilly out there. the cool air will hang around for awhile. some folks might see a snow flurries. we
